Amazon has abruptly canceled its contracts with three major delivery firms, a move that will put more than 2,000 people out of work and may signal a shift in how the online retail giant plans to deliver millions of packages to homes across the country every day. It’s a program called Delivery Service Partners, and Amazon is hoping it will solve the problem of last-mile delivery. With an initial investment “ as low as $10,000 ,” according to Amazon, an entrepreneur can start a business that hires drivers and leases up to 40 vans to deliver packages from warehouses to homes. The costs of working with Amazon are so substantial that independent delivery companies are increasingly turning away Amazon's business, says Peter Schlactus, co-founder of the Association for Delivery Drivers.
